How did you get started with CrossFit? I really stumbled on to CrossFit. In the summer of 2012 I signed up for a six week personal training program that my gym offered. My youngest daughter was two years old at the time and I was still struggling to lose the last ten pounds of baby weight and get back into pre-pregnancy shape. The gym paired me up with Alex as my personal trainer and who was also the head coach for the CrossFit program there. During our weekly personal training sessions Alex basically had me doing CrossFit. And when we planned out my weekly exercise schedule he started suggesting I attend CrossFit classes in addition to the spinning and running I was already doing. After a few weeks I was hooked! Not only did I lose those ten pounds but ended up getting into the best shape of my life. After the six weeks were over I started exclusively doing CrossFit.
Favorite WOD or movement? My favorite WOD is Nancy and my favorite movements are probably overhead squats and deadlifts.
Least favorite WOD or movement? My least favorite WOD is DT and my least favorite movement are wall walks.
What is your proudest CrossFit accomplishment so far? My proudest CrossFit accomplishment so far is taking fourth place in my first competition, a rookie comp. I trained hard for it but had no idea how I would compare to the other competitors. I was shocked to win a few of my heats and eventually make it to the finals. Plus, the three women who ended up on the podium were significantly younger than me. It felt great to know I could compete at that level with women who were between ten and twenty years younger than me! What do you love about 510CrossFit? I love so many things about 510 CrossFit! I love the diversity of our box. There are people from all walks of life, from high school students to grandmothers. I love how down to earth and approachable everyone is. We are a community that truly supports each other! And we have great coaches who are knowledgeable, engaged, caring, and know how to push each of us just beyond what we thought our limits were.
What would you tell people who are not sure about trying CrossFit? I would tell people who are not sure about trying CrossFit to just give it a chance. It might seem intimidating at first but, if you are serious about improving your fitness-no matter where you are starting from-it is a fun, very effective, safe way to reach your goals. And once you reach your initial goals you just keep setting new ones!
What is your favorite quote or motto? One of my favorite quotes is: "For a seed to achieve its greatest expression, it must come completely undone. The shell cracks, its insides come out, and everything changes. To someone who doesn't understand growth, it would look like complete destruction." - Cynthia Occelli
